The
custom paint on this early 1970s Chevy Camaro SS drew
lots of attention from those attending the Nationals.
I can't remember the details, though it seems to me
this car was a feature car for Car Craft or another
magazine. It sure was a looker, and had plenty of nice
details, including chrome traction bars and a roll cage.

This
Dodge Challenger was another car with custom paint and chrome
that turned plenty of heads. Despite becoming jaded by the
high quality of the cars at the event, this Dodge earned its
share of attention. The plate reads 6PK 2GO.

This
1958 Ford Fairlane was unusual. The missing bumper sure changes
the look, and compared to stock, really improves the look.

Traffic ground to a standstill on North Peoria Road as street
machines clogged the road. From the photos, it looks like
they had fairgrounds traffic in the oncoming lanes of traffic.
They may have made traffic one-way, I can't remember. This
view is looking north from beside my car. Click here
for a map.

This is the view looking south on North Peoria Road. Sitting
in traffic was tough on the cars, many of which were overheating.
Because traffic was only creeping forward, we pushed my Chevy
until traffic began to move more quickly. Lots of people pushed
their cars. Folks got out of their cars and chatted while
we waited.

I really
like this 55 Chevy hardtop. The colors are great, and I think
the wheels -- particularly the chrome -- adds a lot. Note
the amber parking light lenses. I prefer the clear in most
cases, but with this car, the amber lenses looks good.

This is a look at our campsite at Riverview. Stan Walker's
1989 Z-28 Camaro is parked in front of my Chevy, which has
the hood up (I was checking the coolant level). At left is
my tent, at right, Stan and Sherry's.

There's no Mopar I drool over more than the winged warriors,
the Dodge Daytona or the Plymouth Superbird shown here. These
cars were produced solely to allow NASCAR to use the race-designed
body style. Today the cars are worth a mint.

This LT1
Corvette had typical additions to 'Vettes of its era -- aluminum
mags and the obligatory chrome side pipes. I liked sidepipe
look until my girlfriend sat down in a Vette with them and
accidently burned her leg.

Don't ask me what this thing is or how it got into the Street
Machine Nationals. It was the most unusual machine on the
grounds! I never saw it parked to take a closer look, he was
always riding somewhere.

There's
not much room for passengers, but this guy looks happy to
be at the back of the Conestoga-style wagon. It sure was neater
than a golf cart. It sports a Street Machine Nationals plate
on the back.

This 1966 Ford Mustang Fastback looks fairly stock until you
look under the hood. The V-8 featured twin turbochargers. It
was an amazing motor, and I'm sure it was featured by various
car mags.
|
This multi-hued Corvette features NACA style air scoops in
the hood and a nice two-toned paint job. The plate says the
owner is a CAR BUF.

A couple from Pennsylvania brought R ZEE to the Nats. The
1969 Camaro Z-28 did NOT have the usual stripes.

Here's the 1983 Nats logo as printed on a T-shirt.
